Each summer the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association hosts a
variety of ministries and activities. The Children’s Show is an 8-week
summer theater experience for youth and children ages 8 to 15. This summer we learned and shared this original version of Snow White.
Welcome to the Saturday, August 16, 2008 performance of Snow White. (medium bandwidth)
Introduction, Announcements, Prayer, “Blessed Be the Name of the Lord”
Scene 1 - “Storytime - Celebration and Sorrow”
Gwenlyn is putting her daughter, Karissa, to bed, and keeping with their usual custom, it’s time for a story. Karissa has chosen a favorite, one she knows by heart, but one she changes a little with each reading. Gwenlyn enjoys her daughter’s imagination. Together they walk into the beautiful scene. It’s a celebration at the castle. The King is marrying his beloved Queen Coralie.
The joy in the Kingdom is strong, and continues for many days, until a sad afternoon leaves all with a broken heart.
Scene 2 - “Moonlight in the Gardens”
The King, noble and courageous, rules the Kingdom well, and his daughter, Snow White, grows up happy and loved. But sometimes she wonders about her mother, and on moonlit evenings, when the King walks in the gardens, she sometimes walks and talks with him.
Scene 3 - “The Letter”
A surprise letter from over the western mountains catches everyone by surprise. Will the King marry again?
Who is the girl with the unusual name? And what’s in a name anyway?
Scene 4 - “Lady for a King”
Unsure of what to do, the King and the Castle Friends invite the girl to come for a visit. Tem arrives with her young friend, Galewind. The Castle Friends host their guests with all the kindness they have to offer, and Tem and Galewind make a very positive impression.
Scene 5a - “Entrance of the Dudes”
Just as Fabrioso predicted, the King and Queen were married later that summer. The King looked noble all dressed in White. The Queen contrasted very nicely in her long black dress. It looked almost like a chess game. But she had won the hearts of all, and everyone hoped the golden days had returned again. The strange thing was no one from the other kingdom attended the wedding. Tem promised some of her friends would arrive soon. And “arrive” they did.
Scene 5b - “Entrance of the Dudes” (cont.)
Everyone in the Castle is taken by surprise when the Bad Dudes arrive. Even Tempestua, who knew they were coming, is dismayed by the way they came. She turns on them fiercely after the Castle Friends leave the room. Then she tells them her plans.
Scene 6 - “Conversations in the Gardens”
The Bad Dudes adjust their behavior to match Tempestua’s wishes, and everything settles back down. Everyone wonders if maybe that one day had just been a bad day. But one night in the gardens, two conversations change everything.
Scene 7 - “A Turn for the Worse”
Tempestua gathers the Castle Friends in the North Pavilion to tell them the King is very sick and that no one knows why. Explaining that healing flowers grow on a mountain far to the north, she asks who would be willing to go in search of them.
Scene 8 - “Surprise in the Forest”
Deep in the forest, the Bad Dudes, who were supposed to escort the Castle Friends to the edge of the Kingdom, suddenly turn on them.
Demanding to know the secret of the gold, they tie them up for the night.
Scene 9 - “Back at the Castle”
Leading the Castle Friends to a safe place, Duke Windsworth goes back to the Castle to see what he can find out.
Scene 10 - “In the South Tower”
After seeing the King, the Duke has even more questions than before. He goes immediately in search of Tem, but decides on the way
it may be best not to mention how much he knows. He finds Tem and the Bad Dudes in the South Tower.
Scenes 11 and 12 - “The Queen Speaks Again” and “The Candle”
Believing the Duke to be on her side, the Queen sends the rest of the Castle Friends away on a long journey to the South. This group is also tied up by the Bad Dudes, but the Duke comes to the rescue again. On returning to the Castle, the Duke finds the Queen is enraged because of Snow White’s beauty. She tells him to take Snow White deep into forest and bring back her heart.
Scene 13b - “In the Heart of the Forest” (cont.)
Stunned by the realization of what is happening, Snow White remembers good times in the past. Hoping to be as strong and brave as on brighter days, she sings herself to sleep. But voices in the forest wake her and surprise her with joy and kindness.
Scene 14 - “Gold Miner Mansion”
Taking her to their home, a place they call Gold Miner “Mansion,” the Miners welcome Snow White. She is the first guest they’ve seen in years, and they sing to her of all the magnificent trees in the forest. When the evening comes to an end, Snow White, surrounded by new friends, falls asleep with a peaceful heart.
Scenes 15 and 16 - “The Mirror Tells All” and “In the Deep Dungeon”
The Queen, hearing from the Mirror that Snow White lives, and that the Duke is assembling the Castle Friends to storm the Castle before dawn, plots one last desperate scheme. When Doom describes a hidden dungeon deep in the Castle, she tells him to write a note, and to bring two poisons to the dungeon.
Scenes 17 and 18 - “Arrival of the Duke” and “Morning in the Forest”
Leaving the King in the dungeon, the Queen and the Bad Dudes head for Gold Miner Mansion to bring the poisoned apple to Snow White. But the Duke and the Castle Friends have made good time, arriving at the Castle sooner than the Queen expected.
Scene 19 - “The Queen Returns”
Returning to the Castle, the Queen and the Bad Dudes celebrate their victory. One last task awaits. They must bury the King’s body. The Queen congratulates her crew outside the dungeon door.
Scenes 20 and 21 - “In the Silent Kingdom” and “All is Well Again”
Years pass, and silence reigns across the Kingdom. Even the river seems to flow more slowly. Then one day a heart on fire comes walking through the forest. With a friend, he discusses the strange land they have discovered, and wonder what it all means.
Curtain Call
Scene 13a - “In the Heart of the Forest”
The Duke and Snow White walk farther and farther from the Castle. The sun is slowly setting, and shadows begin covering the forest floor.
Snow White is carrying Tem’s box. Finally she asks the Duke where they are going.
